10am - 3pm
spring foraging walk + cooking class + lunch
*This is a small, hands-on foraging + cooking class
We will spend this very special day with one of my favorite people on the planet, Rebecca Beyer. Her recently published books (Mountain Magic and Wild Witchcraft) delve into the incredible ways that the people of Appalachia and the American backwoods have built and sustained deep traditions rooted in the power of place, land, and nature.
Today, we will learn the fundamentals of Appalachian foraging, the history and uses of plants as folk medicine and food source and what makes our region’s botanical landscape so unique.
The morning will begin with a slow-paced foraging-exploration walk where Rebecca will share her amazing knowledge of the plants, flowers, edibles, and wild things of our region.
We will move into the kitchen where we will discuss, explore, and learn all about how to cook with some of our favorite foraged + cultivated spring goodies!
A seated picnic lunch of what we've prepared under the oak will follow (weather permitting, alternatively, we will be in the Barn dining room.)
Rebecca Beyer has a B.S. in Plant and Soil Science from the University of Vermont where she fell in love with growing food. She completed a Masters in Appalachian Studies and Sustainability, concentrating in Appalachian Ethnobotany at Appalachian State University.
She practices, researches and writes about Appalachian Folk Magic, Traditional Witchcraft, Primitive Skills, Homesteading, Foraging, Appalachian Ethnobotany and European and Appalachian Folk Ways. Her books “Wild Witchcraft - Folk Herbalism, Garden Magic, and Foraging for Spells, Rituals, and Remedies" (Simon and Schuster May, 2022) and "Mountain Magic" (Quarto Press. Jan, 2023) can be found in most bookstores and on Amazon.
